SUVA, Sept. 22 (Xinhua) -- Fiji recorded 72 new COVID-19 cases and no new deaths on Wednesday, bringing the total number to 50,270 cases and 579 deaths since the pandemic started in the country.

Permanent Secretary for Health James Fong said 32 new recoveries have been reported with 12,982 active cases currently.

There have been 50,200 cases during the outbreak that started in April.

Fong said 108 COVID-19 patients were in hospital, with nine patients in severe condition and two in critical condition.

Following the mop-up vaccination program for the first dose, and the review of the target population, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services has updated its total target population of adults aged 18 and over for the nationwide COVID-19 vaccination campaign.

The new target population of adults aged 18 years and over is 618,173.

Fong said a total of 589,301 adults in Fiji have received their first dose of the vaccine and 405,839 have received their second doses.

A total of 7,102 teenagers aged from 15 to 17 were vaccinated over the last two days.
